LEE Filters Seven5 Soft Edge Filter Set

This Graduated Neutral Density Filter Set includes the 0.3 (1-Stop), 0.6 (2-Stop), and 0.9 (3-Stop) soft edge filters, and a triple filter wrap made of soft microfiber.

These filters are rectangular in shape so that you, the photographer, have the ability to manipulate where the grad line falls within the frame. If you wish to have more skyline than foreground simply move the filter down within the holder. Moving the filter up within the holder will allow for more foreground than skyline, you have ultimate creative control!

A soft edge grad filter is recommended when the variation in light readings within a scene is less pronounced or the horizon line has any deviation, such as mountains, trees or rock formations. For example, when photographing a landscape in which the sky is much brighter than the foreground, placing the Neutral Density part of the filter onto the sky in the frame will reduce the sky exposure without effecting the foreground. This enables cloud detail to be kept correctly exposed and avoids the “white out” effect caused by exposing for the foreground. The soft edge grad filter is also used on occasions when the effect of a hard edge grad would be apparent in the resulting image, showing as a ‘line’ across the composition. The transition in tones, from bright to dark, should appear very natural when using a soft grad.

The purpose of the ND grad is to reduce the brightness of selected areas of the frame. Crucially, a true neutral density grad should have no impact on color balance, and this is where LEE Filters ND grads excel, as they are perfectly neutral.

It is also possible to stack neutral density grad filters within the same holder, as long your filter holder is set up to hold more than one filter, this allows you to achieve a variety of effects. Don’t forget, neutral density graduated filters – as with most others in the LEE Filters range – are compatible with both digital and film photography.

Neutral density grads are available in both hard edge and soft edge versions, and in strengths of 0.3, 0.45, 0.6, 0.75 and 0.9. The 0.3 strength equals one stop, while each subsequent increment equals an additional half-stop. Therefore, if, for example, the sky in a scene were two-and-a-half stops brighter than the foreground, a 0.75 ND grad positioned across the sky without encroaching on the foreground would ensure an even exposure.
