All Brands of Variable ND filters are made from 2 polarizers,
When using Ultra Wide's you will get the same uneven "polarization" with the Variable ND effect as you will get using any circular polarizer or linear polarizer on any ultra wide lenses. You will also get strange results if you operate any Variable ND outside the marked range on the vari's filter mounting rings.

If you need to control Depth of Field on a ultra wide, it is still best to use regular solid ND filters now up to 7 stops.
When you go past 4 f/stops on many brands of HD SLR cameras you will sometimes get a spike in the IR light range, causing strange colors
Your regular ND filter or ND Vario is holding back so much of the visible light, the built in IR filters on the sensors are not strong enough to correct the color. Then it is best to use ND solid filters with IR filtration built in or add a Hot Mirror IR blocking filter along with the Variable ND

Heliopan Vario
The filter on the left is the Heliopan 77mm Vario ND Filter
The Heliopan has the absolute best rotating slim mount for this kind of working Vario ND filter
for comparison next to Hitech W2C same mount as Hitech Multistop a EW mount " Extra Wide" .

In testing here at 2filter we have found the Tiffen Vari ND filters polarizing foils are very neutral. The 2filter Tech Guy is still in the process of shooting test shots from all the popular brands of variable ND faders. The Brands above all have neutral results we will not sell ant that doesn't produce neutral colors. 2filter has tried some units made in China most have been way off color and lot of Photoshop or post production time to correct the file colors, if you even can. Some low priced Variable ND Faders are so off color you better shoot in B+W only.

Some other brands from China we tested and will not sell, 2filter has seen dust in between the 2 polarizers and finger prints! Photographers/cinematographers just can not clean them.

The Tiffen VND filter is constructed so you can remove the top optical polarizer to clean the inside optics of the variable filter. When taking any ND variable filter apart, if you can for cleaning. The precise alignment to the original location/position in the rotating ring including also the front and back position of the polarizer after cleaning is critical for the range marks of min to max to be correct and the ND variable filter to work as new.The Genus ND Fader can be taken apart with a special lens repair tool.

The Heliopan vignettes a tiny bit with a setting of 10 mm on small chip HDSLR cameras at 12mm no issues. The Heliopan Vario works best starting around settings of 22mm-24mm on full frame HD Slr cameras.

The Heliopan doesn't need a mark it is the only one made with built in min-max stops

 We wish the Hitech/Formatt which has tested well included a pouch or case, the foam in the box the Hitech's come in gets all over the filters, you will want to wrap the Hitech Multistop or the Formatt Warm 2 Cool in a microfiber cloth if you continue to use the box they come in. The best solution would be a pouch,the pouch has to be 2 sizes larger than the mm of the filter because of the extra wide front element
