Utilizing a modular filter slot system, the filter holder allows for the convenient use of up to three, 100mm-wide, 2mm-thick filters such as the included Kase Wolverine neutral density filters, along with the included circular polarizer. The slot system can also be reconfigured so that the kit's filter holder accommodates up to three separately available 100mm-wide, 1.1mm-thick filters along with the circular polarizer filter. While in use, the circular polarizer filter magnetically fits within the filter holder system so that it can be quickly installed, removed, or switched with a different Kase 90mm magnetic filter depending on the subject or changing lighting conditions.
Constructed for durability while remaining lightweight, use of the K9 100mm Master Filter Holder Kit is easily accomplished by first screwing one of its included 77 or 82mm adapter rings onto a lens or step-up ring with corresponding front filter threads. A 67-82mm step-up ring as well as a 72-82mm step-up ring for use with the 82mm adapter ring are also included for lenses with 67mm or 72mm front filter threads, respectively. After being fitted onto an adapter ring, the filter holder's locking knob helps to provide a reliable, yet adjustable connection that allows the holder to be rotated 360°, which benefits the use of graduated neutral density or other filters that are enhanced by varied positioning. The included circular polarizer filter can then be placed within the filter holder assembly, followed by 100mm-wide filters that are either 2mm or 1.1mm-thick.
The adapter rings accommodate the magnetic circular polarizer within the filter holder system. When combined with both the adapter ring and filter holder, the circular polarizer filter can be rotated to adjust its effect. An external dial on the filter holder integrates with the polarizer's geared filter ring, allowing for the independent rotation of the circular polarizer filter in order to adjust the intensity of the polarization effect. Two pairs of screw-in guide blocks are included. When installed, one guide block pair creates three slots for 100mm-wide, 2mm-thick filters while the other guide block pair creates three slots for 100mm-wide, 1.1mm-thick filters.
The Kase 100 x 150mm Wolverine Solid Neutral Density 1.8 and 3.0 Filters provide a respective 6 and 10-stop exposure reduction. Their 1.8 and 3.0 densities creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. By increasing your aperture or slowing your exposure time, you can control depth of field and convey movement more easily. Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image and are ideal for pairing with other filters.
The Kase 100 x 150mm Wolverine Soft-Edge Graduated ND 0.9 and 1.2 Filters both help to darken specific areas of an image, such as bright skies, while allowing for a normal, unaffected exposure in the other regions of the image. Each of these filters are densest at the edge and taper to clear by the middle, with a soft-edged line of transition between the dense and clear areas. Neutral density filters with a soft-edged line of transition are able to filter the sky while minimizing their effect on the land. They are particularly useful where the transition between sky and foreground is indeterminate, such as images featuring mist, fog, or the tops of trees. Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image and these respective filters provide up to a 3 and 4-stop reduction in light from entering a lens.
The Kase 100 x 150mm Wolverine Reverse-Graduated ND 0.9 Filter can be applied to darken bright skies, specifically during a sunrise or sunset, while allowing for a normal, unaffected exposure in the other regions of the image. This filter achieves its effect with a 0.9 band of density above its center region that provides up to a 3-stop reduction in light from entering a lens. The band extends in both vertical directions and tapers to approximately a 0.3 density and a 1-stop reduction in light at the edge above it. Directly below the 0.9 band of density, it tapers to clear, with a hard-edged line of transition before the clear area.
The placement of a 0.9 band of density with a clear area directly below allows the 100 x 150mm Wolverine Reverse-Graduated ND 0.9 Filter to match the positioning of the sun when it is at, or immediately above, the horizon. In such instances, the sun can appear closer to the center of an image as opposed to the upper edge, and an increase in brightness is created that is more prominent on both sides of the sun than above it. This pattern of brightness corresponds to the density pattern on the 100 x 150mm Wolverine Reverse-Graduated ND 0.9 Filter. The hard-edged line of transition in this reverse-graduated neutral density filter is useful for hard transitions between the sky and land, while the 3-stop to approximately 1-stop gradation is applicable to multiple regions of brightness within the sky.
Kase Wolverine filters are constructed from tempered, optical glass for shock resistance. To prevent internal ghosting and reflections, while further enhancing clarity and color fidelity, each glass surface includes multiple layers of anti-reflection coatings. These coatings also offer greater protection to the filter substrate and help it to stay clean for longer than with uncoated filters.
To store and transport the Kase K9 100mm Master Filter Holder Kit, a rigid, leatherette pouch is provided. It features a secure, buckle closure as well as a shoulder strap that can be used to keep its contents within immediate reach.
